North Mesa's Oldest Corner

Lehi is the northern edge of central Mesa, and concrete contractors who work in Lehi find a neighborhood with a longer history than the city around it. Mormon settlers led by Daniel W. Jones arrived in March 1877, before Mesa was founded. The settlement was first called Jonesville and Fort Utah and was renamed Lehi in 1883. The City of Mesa annexed it in 1970. The Salt River forms Lehi's northern boundary and the Consolidated Canal its southern one.

Between a river and a canal

That setting matters for concrete. Ground near a river and an irrigation canal can be sandy, rocky or damp in places, and it varies across short distances. Before we pour in Lehi, we:

  • Dig and check what is under the topsoil where the slab will go
  • Remove soft or organic material and replace it with compacted base
  • Keep slabs above the surrounding grade and sloped away from structures
  • Leave clear paths for irrigation water and storm runoff to move across the property

Skipping those steps on variable ground is a common reason slabs crack and settle within a few years.

Larger lots, longer pours

Lehi has older homes and a more open feel than the subdivisions to the south and east, and many properties need more concrete than a standard driveway. Common requests include:

  • Long driveways from the road to the house or a detached garage
  • Equipment and barn pads that carry trucks, trailers or tractors
  • RV and trailer slabs with thicker sections and reinforcement
  • Patios off older homes that never had one
  • Repair on aging slabs that have cracked or heaved

A neighborhood with landmarks

The Old Lehi School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 2001 and now houses the Mesa Historical Museum. A portion of State Route 202 runs through the area, and Lehi borders the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. When a project sits near a public road or a canal right-of-way, we check what applies with the City of Mesa and any canal authority before we set forms.

Heavy-use slabs

An equipment or trailer pad takes more load than a house driveway. We make it thicker, add rebar on chairs so it sits in the right part of the slab, and pay close attention to base compaction, because a heavy slab on soft ground will settle. We also thicken the edges where wheels roll on and off, since that is where unsupported slabs usually crack first.

Long driveways and gravel transitions

Where a concrete drive meets gravel or dirt, the edge takes a beating from tires dropping off the slab. We thicken that edge and can add a short concrete apron so the transition is smooth. On long drives, we plan joints and slope so water drains off the sides rather than running the full length of the slab and washing out the shoulders at the bottom.

Mesa weather, Mesa rules

As part of Mesa, Lehi shares the city's climate: a July mean high around 105.9 degrees in east Mesa's records, a record of 121, and about 10.76 inches of precipitation a year. Summer pours start early. City of Mesa rules apply to permits, and the city lists detached structures over 200 square feet among projects needing a permit, which matters if your slab is for a new shop or barn.

Lehi Questions

Can you pour a pad for a barn or shop in Lehi?

Yes. We size the thickness and reinforcement for the load. If the building is over 200 square feet, Mesa requires a permit for the structure, and we coordinate the slab with that.

Is Lehi part of Mesa?

Yes. Mesa annexed Lehi in 1970, so City of Mesa rules apply.

Does being near the canal or river change the work?

It can. Soils vary more there, so we check the ground, remove soft material and compact a solid base before pouring.
